Maya The Brave - The Warrior's Big Sister

When you have a special-needs child, you become a special-needs family.  We have all been changed by loving, knowing & caring for this boy. Our life has changed significantly, the course we were on was sharply rerouted without any warning or preparation.

Maya was thrust into the role of Big Sister to her special-needs brother at the age of 3 and has met the challenge with love, understanding and kindness. We have gotten the questions 'Why did God make Khyle sick?', 'How come doctors in Nassau couldn't care for Khyle?', 'Will I ever be able to play with him like I play with my other young cousins?' Only God knows if we answered any of those questions properly but I am so grateful that there has never been an ounce of animosity against Khyle because of his difficulties.  She loves playing with him, showing him his toys and helping me bathe him & change his diaper. Sometimes I let her fill the water syringes for his feeding tube & she thinks that is great. Most recently, she insisted on taking him to her 'Back to School' night because she wanted her teacher to meet him.

Maya has had to give up a lot --the biggest thing of course is being able to live at home in The Bahamas with her family.  This she laments often, yet it has not affected the way she treats Khyle or talks about him. Sometimes she asks for another sibling (yikes!) but she is learning to work with us in navigating this very challenging life.

Maya is brave. Sure she cries when Khyle goes into the hospital but you can be brave and still have a tender heart. She prays for Khyle and she loves him like only a big sister can.  God bless you, Maya the Brave, Khyle needs you just as much as he needs Mommy & Daddy and of course we need you too.
